Microsoft XBox 360 And The Kinect

Jan. 25th 2012

Each year, video game technologies increasingly resembles the fanciful ideas discovered in a Star Trek episode. In 2006, Nintendo released the Wii, which was the first residence video game console based around motion sensitive controls and featured games that one could directly interact with using physical movements, as opposed to strictly pressing buttons.

The Wii proved wildly popular, outselling its competitors, the PS3 and Xbox 360, and in December 2009, broke the record for best-selling console in the single month within the United States. It was so successful in reality, that the PS3 nearly immediately tried to implement some degree of motion sensitive control in its method, introducing the Six-axis controller. The Wii produced video games a much more physical activity than they had ever been perceived as and appealed to a wide demographic including individuals who were specifically non-gamers. It’s easy, fun interactivity created it appealing to all sorts, not just hardcore gamers.

On November 4th, 2010, however, Microsoft intends to up the ante in a big way by releasing the Microsoft Kinect. The Xbox 360 Kinect is webcam style peripheral that detects motion, gestures, facial expressions, and voice commands, utilizing this as the medium via which players interact with games. Whereas the Wii still utilized a controller whose presence and physical orientation had been detected by the system, the Xbox Kinect requires no controller whatsoever. The gamer’s physical self is detected using an RGB camera and depth sensor capable of three dimensional motion capture, to ensure that no controller is required to interact with the system. One’s physical movements are read and interpreted directly by the game.

The Kinect is capable of simultaneously tracking up to six separate individuals, with a feature extraction of 20 joints or 48 skeletal points per player, and depending on their distance from the sensor bar, is able to interpret the movements of individual fingers. The sensor bar itself is seated atop a motorized pivot that will tilt 27 degrees up or down, and has an angular field of view of 57 degrees. In between the motion capture capabilities as well as the sensor bar’s ability to physically orient itself, the program is even able to track and follow a moving individual throughout applications for instance video chat via Xbox Live or Windows Live Messenger.

Where the Wii was merely a glimpse into what home consoles were genuinely capable of, the Kinect firmly commits itself to that path and aims to revolutionize not only the way games are played, but what genuinely defines a game. So innovative is the engineering in truth, that Microsoft intends for this to function practically as the release of an entirely new console, which doesn’t seem unfair given that the Kinect will most certainly make the Xbox 360 function as new. Thus far, 16 launch titles have been announced, with a myriad a lot more no doubt on the way.

Between the Kinect, and similarly exciting systems in development for the Playstation 3 – furthermore to whatever innovations 3rd party software developers are in a position to wring out of the technologies – the future of gaming promises to be something truly out of science fiction.

Still Popular And Challenging Is The Xbox

Jun. 17th 2010

A few years ago, when the Xbox 360 system was introduced, it was the seventh generation console and it was an instant hit with consumers. Even though the Xbox still shares the market with other popular gaming systems such as the Wii and the PS3, it is clear, based on sales, that Microsoft Xbox 360 video games are among the hottest on the market.

Many gamers will adamantly claim that the Xbox 360 is the best gaming console available because it delivers the best overall gaming experience, including a phenomenal online adventure through the many Xbox 360 games that a person can play. In addition, the Xbox 360 also sports what is considered to be the most unique and intense collection of exclusive game titles, which sets it apart from the other gaming platforms even more.

There are so many different Microsoft Xbox 360 video games on the market these days that it is often difficult for a person to settle down and decide on which of the new games they should get. This is especially true of people who have a limited budget because just one game can be pretty expensive and people want to make sure they buy Xbox 360 games that they will enjoy the most.

For those who have more experience with the Xbox 360 video game genre, it can be very exciting when new game titles are introduced to the market, and there are many avid Xbox 360 fans who like to be the very first to get their hands on the hot new games. At the same time, this strategy can sometimes backfire on people who jump too fast to buy the “latest and greatest game.”

If they happen to be one of the first to purchase a newly released Xbox 360 game video, then they might end up discovering that they really wasted their money because they don’t like the game. Different people have different tastes and likes when it comes to their video games and while a game might be advertised in a way to appeal to a wider audience, it may not hit the specific triggers of an avid gamer.

Because of this, it can make a lot of sense to hold off making a purchase of a new game release until you can find some Xbox 360 reviews that cover that specific game. Sometimes people will get an early release and will post a review, but often these early reviewers have some vested interest, such as earning commissions, in encouraging you to buy the product.

With this in mind, it is a good idea to go to some of the Xbox 360 forums and find some real-life reviews that people have posted. You will usually get an unbiased opinion about the Microsoft Xbox 360 video games they have played and you can even contact them through the forum and ask questions. At the end of the day, this should help you buy games you will enjoy most and help you avoid wasting money on games that just are not for you.
