Years ago the gaming market was split between those who preferred the games console, those who preferred the PC and those who preferred the hand held devices. Now the gap in the market isn’t as obvious with it not being unusual for households to have all three options for growing kids. That’s not such a bad thing though especially for the games developers that have the benefit of exploiting more markets and more customers.

Even with more people playing all three platforms, there are still a number of people who would not even consider the hand held devices because they feel they are getting an inferior gaming experience because the buttons are fiddly and the sound will never be as good. The fact is that you are never going to get immersed in a game in the same way that you can with surround sound and a 50 inch screen with a rumble chair.

But there are also many hand held fans who will tell you they are addicted to some of the games that have been scaled down especially for the devices such as the 3DS or the DSi. The hand held industry have been creating addictive games and exploiting this since the early eighties; you may remember games like Donkey Kong in particular.

Most of the games that have been huge on the hand held devices have also been really successful when they have made the move to the other platforms. The Mario Bros series for example has been successful on every platform it has been available for. But this is not always the case when games move from the games console to the hand held devices.

The big games in terms of games consoles have not really had much of a mention in terms of hand held devices. You are not going to want to play a game like Halo or Call of Duty on a hand held device after playing it on the games console.
